How We Calculate Your Plant's Water Needs
Not random guesswork. Our formula combines four real horticultural variables to give you a genuinely accurate schedule.
Every plant's water requirement comes down to one question: how quickly does the growing medium dry out? That rate is determined by the size of the container, the plant's transpiration rate, the light it receives, and the ambient temperature.
For indoor plants, we start with a base evapotranspiration rate for each plant species, then adjust it for pot volume (more soil = slower drying), light level (more light = faster transpiration), and season (lower light and temperature in winter slows growth and water uptake significantly).
For outdoor beds and vegetables, we use surface area as the primary variable and factor in local weather conditions and soil type. Sandy soil has a drainage rate approximately three times faster than clay — so the same amount of rainfall produces very different soil moisture levels depending on what you're growing in.
For trees, trunk diameter is a practical proxy for the established root system size. The rule of thumb among arborists is roughly 38 litres per inch of trunk diameter per week during active growth in dry conditions — scaled down for established trees which can access deeper water reserves.

5 Watering Habits That Make a Real Difference

Water at the Base, Not the Leaves
Direct water to the soil at the base of the stem, not over the foliage. Wet leaves — especially on indoor plants in poor airflow — are an invitation for mildew and fungal spots. Aim for the root zone where it actually matters.
Use Room-Temperature Water
Cold water straight from the tap can shock tropical houseplants and slow root function temporarily. Fill a watering can and leave it on the counter overnight. This also allows chlorine to dissipate, which some plants are sensitive to.
Drainage Holes Are Non-Negotiable
No drainage hole means water collects at the bottom of the pot, keeps the lowest roots permanently wet, and almost always leads to root rot. If your pot doesn't have drainage, add a layer of gravel at the bottom or re-pot into something that drains properly.
Mulch Your Outdoor Beds
A 5–8cm layer of bark mulch or compost on the surface of vegetable beds and borders dramatically slows moisture evaporation. In a hot summer, mulching can cut outdoor watering frequency by nearly half — while also suppressing weeds and improving soil structure.
