6 Critical Data Points in Every Result

We don't just give you a number; we give you a full nutritional breakdown.

Total Product Weight

The exact weight of fertilizer you need to buy or measure out for your entire project area.

Rate per 1k Sq Ft

The specific spreader setting or hand-casting rate required for uniform coverage.

Actual Nitrogen (N)

The amount of pure nitrogen being delivered to your plants to drive foliage growth.

Actual Phosphorus (P)

The precise amount of phosphorus used to trigger root development and flower blooms.

Actual Potassium (K)

The potash levels delivered to ensure disease resistance and overall plant vigor.

Area Verification

Double-check your square footage calculation to ensure the application matches your real-world garden.

Understanding N-P-K

The fundamental building blocks of plant nutrition.

N

Nitrogen

The primary driver for green, leafy growth. Essential for lawns and early-season vegetables.

P

Phosphorus

Triggers root growth and flower/fruit production. Key for new transplants and blooms.

K

Potassium

Acts like a multivitamin for plants, strengthening cell walls and improving drought resistance.

Recommended Fertilizer Ratios

Every plant has unique needs. Here are the common N-P-K ratios for different garden zones.

Lush Lawns

20-5-10 or 24-0-11
High nitrogen is the secret to deep green, carpet-like grass.

Fruit & Flowers

10-30-20 or 5-10-10
High phosphorus (the middle number) triggers blooms and fruit set.

Vegetable Beds

10-10-10 or 5-5-5
A balanced ratio is best for all-purpose vegetable garden health.

Trees & Shrubs

16-4-8 or 12-6-6
Slow-release formulas help woody plants develop strong structural roots.

New Seedlings

5-10-5 or Starter Fert
Gentle phosphorus levels help tiny roots establish without chemical burn.

Acid-Lovers

30-10-10 or Holly Tone
Specialized for Azaleas, Blueberries, and Camellias to maintain soil pH.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions gardeners ask about fertilizing and calculations.

How much nitrogen does a standard lawn need? +
Most lawns thrive with 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. Our calculator uses this as the baseline "Standard Lawn" setting.
Can I use this for liquid fertilizer? +
Yes, as long as you know the weight of the liquid product or the N-P-K ratio. However, most liquid fertilizers are measured in ounces per 1,000 square feet, which may require a different calculation method.
What happens if I over-fertilize? +
Over-fertilizing can cause "salt burn," which dehydrates plant roots and turns foliage brown. It can also cause excessive growth that attracts pests. Our calculator helps prevent this by giving you precise limits.
Do I need a soil test first? +
Highly recommended! A soil test tells you exactly which nutrients (P and K) are already present, so you don't apply what isn't needed. Usually, only Nitrogen needs constant replenishment.
